Armed vs Unarmed Security Guards: Which Does Your Site Need?
Armed officers are not automatically safer — they are appropriate to a specific risk profile. Here is how to decide.
The decision between armed and unarmed guarding should follow a risk assessment, not a price list. The question to answer is whether the credible threats to your site involve armed confrontation, and whether an armed officer materially changes the outcome.
Armed guarding suits cash-handling environments, high-value stock, remote industrial sites and premises with a history of armed incidents. Officers must hold current PSIRA grading and firearm competency under the Firearms Control Act, and the provider must be able to produce those records on request.
Unarmed guarding suits corporate receptions, retail floors, schools, estates and most access-control posts. Here the value is discipline: controlled entry, accurate registers, visible deterrence and correct escalation to armed response when something happens.
Many sites are best served by a hybrid: unarmed officers at controlled entry points, backed by monitored CCTV and randomised mobile patrols, with an armed capability on call. That structure usually delivers better coverage per rand than adding armed posts across the board.
